What is leadership?

Leadership can be defined in as many ways as there are and have been leaders. There are also as many definitions of leadership as there are people who have ever met a leader, with a specific leadership style. This distinction is important to make:

  • How the leader views leadership
  • The employee's perception of leadership

These two parts form an equation that, when solved, produces the best possible effect for everyone in an organization.

It is never about removing or changing an intention or a certain leadership style that you have chosen to use. It is always about adding a dimension where you as a leader are aware of what is going on inside you, thus also what you signal and how the people you meet perceive you.

There is always room for leadership development

Leadership and organization

How the leader views leadership tells the intention of the leadership, which style the leader chooses to use. It may be that the leader consciously intends to have a situational leadership, trust-based leadership or perhaps a transformational leadership. It may be that the organization decides what type of leadership should prevail, that the organization has an intention. Notice the word intention. It is the intention, thought and desire of the organization and the leader that the leadership should be e.g. trust-based. It is not the same as those who take part in the leadership agreeing with or experiencing the intended trust-based leadership.

Leadership is never what an organization or leader intends, leadership is always what the leader shows in tone and action. What employees perceive is not the same as the leader's intention. Employees experience the leader's tone and actions. It is also the case that leadership is primarily experienced when employees need it most, i.e. probably when the leader's intention is least active.

So how the manager or leader defines themselves, whether they intend to be a manager or a leader, will matter less than how employees perceive management or leadership.

What is most important in leadership?

Being aware of what you show in your tone and actions. To become aware of this as a leader, Konciensia offers the following:

Nervous system adapted leadership

Imagine that the person who has chosen trust-based leadership becomes angry, disappointed, offended or sad and loses control for a short time. What happens then to the perceived trust, to the manager's intention? What is manifested in tone and action? This is where Nervous System Adapted Leadership comes in. Konciensia works according to Polyvagal theory. which in brief can be summarized by how our autonomic nervous system controls our automatic physiological reactions which the brain then interprets for us. The brain's interpretation then forms the basis for what behavior we have and the tone with which we manifest our behavior. The awareness of your unique way of automatically and physiologically reacting to situations gives you access to the ability to choose behavior and how your behavior is manifested. In other words, you are given access to increased ability to choose how your employees will experience your leadership, regardless of your intention.

That the leader's history is not played out in the present.

Imagine that the person who has chosen situational leadership is offended and takes it personally when an employee tells them about their dissatisfaction in the workplace, what will happen? What is manifested in tone and action? This is where the importance of the leader's story not being played out in the present comes in. When the leader equates himself with the workplace or the company, it is never about what is happening now, but what happened then and how it stuck with the leader. This is not wrong, not bad and does not tell you anything about whether you should be a leader or not. It is just true.

As a leader, making yourself aware of when your history, ego or interpretations of past experiences play out in the present makes it possible to choose. For the leader who has a situational leadership, it means exactly that, that the situation determines the leadership and not the leader's interpretation of the situation. This is because until we are aware of this, we never react to the situation itself but to our interpretation of the situation. Let us show you your unconscious interpretations of the situation so that you can adapt your leadership and increase the impact for everyone in the organization.

Sustainable leadership

Imagine that someone who has chosen transformational leadership is stressed when an employee tells them that they do not feel seen by the leader. What is manifested in tone and action? Recovering is exactly what the word says. It is to recover, to bring back something that already exists. Often people tend to talk about recovery as something we should do at the weekend or on vacation. We believe that recovery is something constant and that it can be divided into two parts;

  1. How you listen to your own gut feelings determines how you take care of yourself.
  2. How to deal with what your gut is telling you

In your role as a leader, is there anything that you have said yes to, joined or been passive in where you would have preferred to say no? If there is such an occasion that comes to mind from the recent past, there is a need to recuperate. The biggest reason for stress-related conditions is that we don't say no where we would like to say no. It's more than setting a limit, it's facing the reason and coming out stronger. This part is what we call top-down recovery. It means facing your thoughts and feelings that limit your ability to recover.

The second part of recovery is bottom-up recovery. This means that through body-based methods from yoga, mindfulness and somatic issues, we build safety within you. In short, we help you gain more flexibility in how and when you respond to a stressful situation. We are trained in C ompassionate Inquiry and ongoing training in Trauma Adapted Yoga. This means that we help you and your nervous system without you having to think about what you are doing by increasing your interoception; the ability to understand, feel and interpret what is happening within you. What happens inside you before your brain, your history and your ego interpret what the nervous system is trying to tell you.

FAQ

What qualities are needed to be a good leader?

Curiosity! As a leader, you should be curious first and foremost about yourself in order to be able to meet and engage with others. It is only then that you as a leader can become aware of what you show in tone and action and thus how employees experience you as a leader. Curiosity is also required when it comes to the realization that we do not react to the present but to what we have experienced in the past, with that realization comes the opportunity to choose. Finally, to be able to recover as a leader, recovery. How you as a leader listen to your gut feelings and then how you take care of what the gut feelings tell you.

Power to act! That as a leader you have the power to follow what curiosity about yourself brings.

Opportunity! As a leader, you must see the possibility in yourself, your employees and co-workers. Seeing the possibility is also related to being energetic, to act and to understand that it is with me that it starts. That means change and development. The opposite of this is hope, the leader needs to have hope but there is no power in hope. There is power in possibility.

What are the different types of leadership?

As many different types as there are and have been leaders. We can list everything from situational leadership, to authoritarian leadership and transformational leadership. No matter which leadership style you or your company/organization has chosen, Konciensia offers a dimension of leadership that complements what you already do today.

We will not ask you to change your type of leadership. We are not selling a new product or a new system. We are refining, opening opportunities and highlighting what already exists. The leadership is within you, let's find your best leadership style together.
